Bond makes a premiership statement

By Holly Slattery

The Bull Sharks have opened their QAFLW campaign with an emphatic 85-0 victory over Wilston Grange on Saturday.

It was the perfect way to start the season and celebrate captain Paris Lightfoot’s 100th game – the first woman to achieve the milestone at Bond University.

“It was actually just so amazing [to play my 100th game], and to get the win was even better,” Lightfoot said.

“Obviously getting the win in round one is really important because of the flow-on effect from there.

“The girls played well today, and I think it’s going to be a good season.”

After watching the women’s reserves win 128-0, Bond University couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season.

Jasmyn Smith was one of eight women making their senior team debut, and her hopes are already set on taking out the premiership.

“The support that we’ve got and the teamwork we showed out there, it’s a winning team,” Smith said.

The 17-year-old pocket rocket stepped up to the plate on Saturday and felt an abundance of support from her teammates.

“The feedback and all the support out on the field was just amazing,” she said.

“It’s such a good culture here and I’m just so glad I’m a part of it, and I’m keen to get the year started.”

Seven women kicked majors, including Laquoiya Motlap who scored four and Shannon Danckert who scored two in the 12.13.85  - 0.0.0 rout.

It’ll be a blockbuster clash in Round two when the Bull Sharks take on last year’s premiers UQ in the grand final rematch.
