Bond Swimmers score Gold for Australia!

Bond University swimmers have won two gold medals, one silver and one bronze in the pool on the weekend - and there could well be more on the way.

Elijah Winnington and Alex Graham claimed gold as members of the Australian men's record-setting 4x200m freestyle relay team last night.

Graham swam the first leg while Winnington, 17, put in the fastest split for Australia - 1min 45.97sec – contributing to a new Games record of 7:05.97.

England claimed the silver medal (7:08.57) with Scotland taking the bronze (7:09.89).

Graham and Winnington are both Georgina Hope Rinehart Swimming Excellence scholars and members of the Bond University swimming squad, under coaches Richard Scarce and Kyle Samuelson. Both swimmers are currently studying business at Bond.

Celebrations will be short-lived for Graham who recently said his upcoming accounting exam was more daunting that stepping up on the blocks for Australia.

For Winnington, claiming gold was the realisation of a years-long dream.

“When you’re 11 you always have dreams and aspirations," the hometown hero said recently.

“But it was only a few years back when I sat down and thought, hey, if I really knuckle down I can make this team.

And to think it’s on the Gold Coast where I was born and bred, it’s very exciting and a dream come true.”

Bond University studentand Rio Olympic silver medallist Madeline Groves took home silver in the women's 50m butterfly and bronze in the women’s 100 butterfly over the weekend.

The trio’s fellow Georgina Hope Rinehart Swimming Excellence scholars – Minna Atherton and Laura Taylor – are yet to compete in some of their events.
