Bond Masters of Construction Practice: First in Class

Bond University is pleased to announce its Master of Construction Practice and Master of Construction Practice (Professional) are the first postgraduate degrees in Australia to secure coveted Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) accreditation.

Graduates are now eligible to join nearly 50,000 other chartered members worldwide, opening up opportunities for practice in over 50 countries where CIOB credentials are highly respected.

CIOB is the world's largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership.

According to Associate Professor of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying, Rick Best, who developed the programs, the CIOB accreditation - together with Bond’s existing Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) accreditation - places Bond construction courses firmly on the world stage.

“Bond was also the first university in Australia to achieve CIOB accreditation for its undergraduate degree in Construction Management and Quantity Surveying. Since then Deakin, Newcastle and RMIT University have followed in our footsteps,” Dr Best said.

Bond’s courses are also accredited by the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) and meet the educational requirements set by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) for the granting of an Open Builders Licence.

“We are now seeing unprecedented demand for these programs, with 60 new entrants in the pipeline for the next two intakes,” Dr Best said.

“Construction will soon be the largest postgraduate course offered by the Faculty of Society & Design.”

A new combined degree of Construction Practice and Project Management was also approved last month. This pathway enables two separate degrees to be earned in six semesters (even less for Australian students choosing an ‘accelerated’ program) and provides additional accreditation from the Australian Institute of Project Management.

The 108-week program looks set to become very popular with international students.

Professor Craig Langston, who is responsible for project management courses at Bond, said project management was an enabling discipline and in this instance leads to a career as a construction project manager.

“We are pursuing a strategy of further combinations, covering the emerging disciplines of development management, sustainable development, integrated design management and strategic portfolio management,” Professor Langston said.

“Breaking down and working across professional boundaries is crucial. At Bond we want to equip our graduates with the ability to solve complex problems via a wider understanding of the world within which these solutions are ultimately sourced”.
