About the position

The Clem Jones Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CJCRM) is currently offering the opportunity to apply for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) position within our team of vision scientists and regenerative medicine specialists. Applicants will have a biological or medical science degree with a substantial research project (e.g. Research Masters’ degree or Bachelor degree with First Class Honours).

CJCRM was established to investigate the therapeutic use of stem cells in tissue repair and disease. An important goal of the Centre is to combine research excellence in stem cell science with clinical translation and to enhance, induce or transplant stem cells for patient benefit.

The Centre supports studies in the broader field of regenerative medicine and stem cell biology, combining stem cell science, biomaterials, tissue engineering, tissue regeneration, intelligent drug delivery and advanced surgery.

Current research projects include stem cell therapy for age-related macular degeneration, retinal degeneration, regeneration of spleen from stem cells and enhancing hematopoiesis during ageing and disease.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest for a fully funded PhD scholarship including tuition and stipend (currently $27,600 per annum). The successful candidate will be expected to commence in early 2020. The position will suit a candidate with an interest in vision science, neuroscience or stem cell biology.

Possible projects include:

  • Vision Group led by Associate Professor Nigel Barnett

The long-term viability of implanting a stem cell-derived RPE cell/electrospun nanofibre scaffold construct as replacement therapy in models of age-related macular degeneration. Novel drug treatment regime to reduce inflammation and so prevent an early immune response following RPE cell implantation. The robustness of an adherent stem-cell differentiation procedure, to produce RPE cells from multiple pluripotent stem cell lines.

  • Hematopoiesis Group led by Assistant Professor Jonathan Tan

The regeneration of spleen from stem cells. Enhancing hematopoiesis during aging and disease. Improving hematopoietic recovery following stem cell transplantation.  

About the person:

The successful PhD candidate will have:

  • A degree in a biological/medical science with a substantial research project (e.g. Research Masters’ degree or Bachelor degree with honours).
  • Excellent analysis and writing skills, demonstrated by contribution to publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work in teams
  • Capacity to work across a range of disciplines
  • Evidence of project management and organisation ability, including the ability to fulfil goals and deliver outcomes within a specified time period
  • Capacity to manage and seek research funds, with support from supervisors
