Description
Foundations of Private Law is an introductory compulsory subject in the Juris Doctor program offered by the Faculty of Law. The subject introduces the structure and sources of private law and the process of private law reasoning. It also provides an overview of tort law, examines a range of specific torts including nuisance and trespass, and considers relevant remedies as well as vicarious liability. Emphasis is placed on the development of legal writing and drafting skills.

Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate advanced and integrated understanding of the following legal topics: the structure and sources of private law; the process of private law reasoning and associated skills; the law of selected torts (other than negligence) such as trespass actions and nuisance; vicarious liability; and defences to torts. 2. Demonstrate competency in exercising the following skill at an introductory level, with creativity, initiative and autonomy: legal writing and drafting. 3. Adhere to the highest standards of professionalism, including a commitment to: learning and working autonomously, accountably and reflectively; behaving ethically and responsibly; and managing time effectively and meeting deadlines.
