Description

This subject aims to build on and consolidate foundational knowledge and skills relevant to mediators and Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners. This subject offers in depth examination and evaluation of critical issues in mediation and family dispute resolution. Students will be able to practically apply advanced knowledge and skills within the context of facilitative mediation. Topics including cross-cultural issues, power, emotion, impartiality, violence, current law, ethics and professionalism will be explored through online modules, practical roleplays and case studies.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate the application of each of the stages of the facilitative mediation process (to meet National Mediator Accreditation Standards).
  2. To critically self-reflect and evaluate their mediator skills, strategies and techniques within the context of facilitative mediation process.
  3. To critically analyse and evaluate an aspect/s of mediation process, skills and/or strategies.

Assumed knowledge:

Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.

Faculty approval required AND Must have completed a minimum 120 Credit Points of LAWS subjects AND have a minimum average of 65% in LAWS subjects. Students must be admitted into a Bachelor law degree or Bachelor of Laws combined degree.

This subject is not available as a general elective. To be eligible for enrolment, the subject must be specified in the students’ program structure.
