LAWS13-127: Climate Violence and the Law

Description

Climate Violence and the Law is an elective subject in the undergraduate programs offered by the Faculty of Law. This subject reframes climate change as climate violence, and looks at the roles played by key actors, including nation States and corporations, in contributing to climate violence. The ways in which law can acknowledge and address forms of climate violence will be considered, including the obstacles which prevent legal reform. The subject adopts a constructive rather than fatalistic approach to climate change and climate law with the aim of empowering students to make a positive difference in this space.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate capacity to explain and reflect upon climate violence and how the law addresses or fails to address it.
  2. Engage critically, in both oral discussion and writing, with contemporary scholarship on climate violence and the law.
  3. Undertake relevant research and set out in essay format clear, evidence-based, legal arguments in relation to a contemporary problem in this area.

Assumed knowledge:

Assumed knowledge is the minimum level of knowledge of a subject area that students are assumed to have acquired through previous study. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet the assumed knowledge expectations of the subject. Students who do not possess this prior knowledge are strongly recommended against enrolling and do so at their own risk. No concessions will be made for students’ lack of prior knowledge.

Restrictions:

Must be admitted into a Bachelor Law degree OR Bachelor of Laws combined degree OR be an approved Study Abroad OR Exchange Law Student.

This subject is not available as a general elective. To be eligible for enrolment, the subject must be specified in the students’ program structure.
