CRIM11-100: Crime and Deviance in Australia

Description

This subject adopts a critical perspective on contemporary issues (pornography, stalking, prostitution, illicit drug use, capital punishment), examines the role of the justice system and some more recent alternatives (sentencing circles and family group conferencing), and explores profiles of offenders and offending (domestic violence, cults, white collar crime, Aboriginal violence).

Learning outcomes

1. List and define the key crime and deviance issues in Australia and will demonstrate such knowledge through tutorial discussions.
2. Critically assess the empirical literature about crime and deviance issues in general and in Australia specifically, and apply these in their written work.
3. Identify key elements of the justice system in Australia and critically evaluate new forms of justice processes.
4. Appreciate the differences between offence categories and be able to compare and contrast these.
