ARCH10-124: Cities: People and Place

Description

This subject will investigate cities that are renowned for their rich urban life, quality of public space, sense of community, efficient public transport systems, climatical appropriateness, spatial complexity and low carbon footprint.  A fundamental understanding of typology, scale, grain, public realm, environment, experience, community and civility will be synthesised with complex issues of urbanisation and fundamental theories and methods of city planning and analysis.  A comparative mapping analysis with an emphasis on the social, economical, political, climatic, historical, cultural and geographical determinants of their urban morphology will also be undertaken. Students will work individually and in teams through workshops and exercises to develop content awareness and application.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate understanding and application of design methods for people focused cities, urban design and form, planning and transport systems.
  2. Develop a methodology for understanding cities as the context for architectural and urban design activity, through research, application of urban design theory and direct spatial experience and analysis.
  3. Develop an appreciation of the social, cultural, historical, environmental, economic and political diversity of cities associated with global urbanisation, as the context within which design should be produced.
