Professional biography

Jessica is a Registered Nurse and experienced teacher and educator, in undergraduate and post-graduate settings, using interactive methods to achieve optimal learning outcomes. Her PhD (Medical Education) was awarded in 2020 for exploring authenticity in simulation-based education. She has over 10 years’ experience in a range of industry sectors, complex domains and occupational settings. Jess is an advocate for inclusive practices in education and health care, and contributes a large portion of her time creating accessible science content for health professionals and general public alike. Jessica is an active clinical nurse in Intensive Care Nursing and currently works as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Bond University. Jessica’s role at Bond University includes the Academic Lead Simulated Participant Program & Year 3 Curriculum Lead. She teaches digital health, social media ethics, electrocardiogram interpretation, burns management and more. Her research focuses on two main areas – health professions education and gender equity in healthcare. She currently is the Co-Lead for the CODA Equity Lab (Exploring equity in healthcare), the project lead on authentic moulage in simulated participants and a number of other projects. She is a co-producer on the Simulcast Podcast and is a sought after speaker for nursing and educational conferences and events.

Research interests

I am an Intensive Care Nurse, Health Professions Educator and Science Communicator.   My research explores the impacts of workforce policy, health practitioner preparedness and development, and science communication. My research expertise includes scoping and systematic reviews, mixed methods research design, semi-structured interviews, survey methods, including the Delphi method, and eye tracking to explore attention.

I am an experienced teacher and educator, in undergraduate and post-graduate settings, using interactive methods to achieve optimal learning outcomes. Specifically, I utilise technology and tactile strategies to engage learners, embodying a reciprocal and constructivist learning philosophy.

I am a sought-after speaker - I have delivered over 60 presentations and workshops, including Keynote Speaking Invitations and Masterclasses on nursing, simulation based education, social media as a health professional, and science communication. I love storytelling and reimagining evidence in ways that are easy to access and understand - I achieve this through my use of social media.  You can see this on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok.

Outside of this, I have worked with multiple Not-for-profit organisations in advisory and Chair capacities - to advise on Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) issues, lead teams to deliver key outcomes related to D&I and lead communication strategies.

  • science communications (including social media for health professionals)
  • moulage techniques in health professions education 
  • The angels and heroes narrative during the COVID-19 pandemic 

I have mixed-methods research expertise, with a particular expertise in eye-tracking methodology, delphi methods, systematic and scoping reviews, stimulated recall interview methods, surveys and other qualitative methods.
