Bond Professor to head-up Global Subject Centre for Law

Bond University Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Nick James, has been appointed as a convenor for OneHE’s new Global Subject Centre for Law – one of 30 Global Subject Centres that are planned.

OneHE is a global network for educators who share a passion for learning and teaching in higher education. It exists to help educators connect, collaborate, innovate and share their practice in order to improve the impact and effectiveness of learning and teaching globally.

The Global Subject Centres initiative seek to foster debate, discussion and innovation within each discipline/subject area, creating a supportive online community for practitioners worldwide.

The Subject Centres sit alongside thematic networks that will initially focus on cross-cutting themes including distributed leadership, widening access, innovative pedagogies and assessment.

Professor James is a former commercial lawyer and has been practising as an academic since 1996. He is passionate about legal education and the role of law schools in modern society.

Professor James has won numerous awards for his teaching including a National Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning, and he is the author of several leading textbooks including Business Law and The New Lawyer (with Bond Faculty of Law colleagues, Professor Rachael Field and Assistant Professor Jackson Walkden-Brown). He has written numerous journal articles, book chapters and conference papers in the areas of legal education, critical legal theory, and disruption of the legal services sector.

Professor James is Executive Director of the Bond University Centre for Professional Legal Education, Executive Editor of the Legal Education Review, Chair of the Australasian Law Teachers Association (ALTA), and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.

OneHE Managing Director Dr Mark Jones said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work further with the appointed convenors. We have every confidence that their enthusiasm together with their passion for learning and teaching in their subjects, will mean that the Global Subject Centres will drive inclusive, innovative practice in and across the disciplines.”

Commenting on his appointment, Professor James said: “I am pleased and proud to join Jessica Guth from Leeds Beckett University in the UK as a foundational Convenor of the new Global Subject Centre for Law. I believe this network has the potential to facilitate genuine, constructive collaboration between law teachers and legal scholars across the globe, and lead to the identification of practical solutions to the challenges that confront us all.”

As a convenor, Professor James will lead discussion and debate in the Global Subject Centre and, in return, receive free membership to OneHE while he serves as its convenor. The appointment is initially for one year. He will also be eligible to apply for higher levels of funding through the OneHE Foundation.

New members can join OneHE. Existing networks of educators wishing to deepen their engagement with their communities can host them for free on the OneHE platform. Network or group managers can find out more at https://onehe.org
