Solomon Islands Law Immersion Placement

Law students within the Faculty of law will have the opportunity to undertake a legal placement in the Solomon Islands during January, May and September semesters. The placement will be in Kirakira, Makira Province. Students are supervised by a lawyer employed by the Solomon Islands Public Solicitor’s Office (PSO).

This Kirakira law placement opportunity is unique for Australian law students and while on placement, students will engage in the following tasks:

  • File preparation and on-going file management for a diverse range of clients;
  • Undertake research, complete case summaries, take client statements, draft court documents and attend local court.
  • Other legal work as directed.
  • Develop and promote community awareness programs.

Students will undertake legal tasks primarily in the civil, criminal and family law jurisdictions.

When are placements available?

Legal placements on the Solomon Islands are on a voluntary basis.

The program is available each semester and students are placed for a two (2) week period on the island.

Generally, students should have completed at least half way into their degree before applying for a legal placement in the Solomon Islands.

Placements are also open to students who are completing the practical legal training and are enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

At the completion of the Kirakira Law Placement, students should be able to:

  • Identify some of the common legal problems facing the people of the Solomon Islands.
  • Take instructions from clients and accurately record that information in writing in a client statement.
  • Select an appropriate case for completion of a detailed written case report.
  • Present that detailed case report before the end of the semester at a designated time.
  • Document a daily reflective diary outlining the development of your legal skills and legal knowledge while working on placement.
  • Identify access to justice issues, particularly in the criminal, civil and family jurisdictions in the Solomon Islands.

Students electing to complete the Solomon Islands Law Immersion Placement will be required to:

  • Attend a briefing workshop on a date to be confirmed but prior to their departure to the Solomon Islands.
  • Identify an appropriate case and collect facts and information for their case report while on placement.
  • Present their report to the AD (SASQ), Subject Coordinators/Academic Supervisor and other students who attended the placements during the relevant semester.

Students interested in participating in a placement in Kirakira are invited to attend an information session that will generally be held by Week 3 of each semester.

The application process includes:

  1. Complete an expression of interest and submit it to Clinical Associate Professor, Libby Taylor
  2. Applications for consideration must be included a covering letter (expressing why you are interested in the placement), a resume along with a copy of your most recent academic transcript
  3. Interviews will be scheduled for successful candidates

Generous Australian Government Scholarships are available for undergraduate (LLB) students under the New Colombo Plan funding.  Students under the age of 28 years can apply for $3000 under the plan on a one-time basis.
