Deferred examinations

Applications for deferred examinations must be lodged with the Student Business Centre before the examination starts or within two working days after the scheduled examination date.

Refer to: Academic Regulations, Item 5/51.

A deferred examination may only be granted where you can demonstrate either:

  • An inability to sit, complete, or perform at the minimum level of your demonstrated abilities, the original examination for medical or compassionate reasons
  • Unexpected and exceptional circumstances beyond your control

The following reasons would normally be considered acceptable grounds for deferring an examination:

  • Illness or medical reasons
  • Accident
  • Serious personal or emotional trauma (e.g. bereavement)
  • Events, sporting or religious commitments at a state, national or international representative level
  • Three scheduled examinations commencing within less than 24 consecutive hours

Please note: if you are unable to sit an examination due to religious observance, you must provide written notice by the end of Week 7 to the Student Business Centre Manager. Notice must include written documentation from a senior person in a religious order such as the Pastor, Church Elder, Imam or Rabbi.

Approval will not be granted where it is reasonable to expect that the circumstances could have been avoided.

The following reasons would be considered unacceptable grounds for deferring an examination:

  • Travel or holiday arrangements
  • Misreading the examination timetable
  • A desire to spread assessment tasks to yield improved performance
  • Events and sporting commitments that are not at a state, national or international representative level
  • Applications normally received after the prescribed deadline

You should seek advice from the Student Business Centre Manager if you are unsure whether your application would meet the criteria for a deferred examination.
