Live at Bond featuring San Mei and Elska
The first concert for 2020 is on Sunday, 12 January, featuring San Mei and Elska.
ADCO Amphitheatre, from 5pm. Free, all ages.
Australian singer/songwriter San Mei seamlessly blends dream pop, psych guitar and atmospheric synths in a manner influenced by The Beatles, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Cat Power and Feist.
Debuting in the early 2010’s, she issued the EPs Necessary in 2017, and Heaven in 2018, which was produced by Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, Alex Lahey, Ali Barter, British India). Her breakthrough single ‘Wonder’ hit #1 on the Hype Machine chart, was added to Triple J, cemented San Mei in the top most played unsigned artists, and earned her Gold Coast Music Awards prizes for Song of the Year and Breakout Artist of the Year.
San Mei’s recent release ‘Love in the Dark’, produced in part by Scott Horscroft (Oh Mercy, Silverchair, Last Dinosaurs, The Presets) and Oscar Dawson, is another step forward in the guitar-heavy, delay ridden, dreamy alt-pop world of San Mei and the wider Australian indie scene.
Having been announced to showcase for a second time at SXSW in 2020, San Mei’s stellar year in 2019 included the BIGSOUND Festival, a headline tour and a tour with Ali Barter, and shows at the Falls Festival and Surfers Paradise Live. She’s been referred to in music media as an artist to watch … come and see why!
Infusing playfulness and wonder into the Australian pop music industry, award-winning Gold Coast artist Elska has redefined the humble harp, marrying the delicate instrument with the power of a loop pedal. Elska won the People’s Choice Award at the 2019 Gold Coast Music Awards, and was dual finalist for Breakout Artist of the Year and Song of the Year, for her debut single ‘Boy’.
She has had a huge couple of years through 2018-2019, playing the National Folk Festival, Adelaide Fringe, Bleach*, Surfers Paradise Live, Australian Music Week, Caloundra Music Festival, Airlie Beach Festival of Music and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Over the last two years, Elska has recorded in the UK with prominent British producer Dan Swift (Passenger, Snow Patrol) and worked on a number of successful side projects including the doco Heart + Harp, a library tour, a TEDx talk and a podcast called Her Creative Hustle.
A true surprise package, Elska’s engaging live performances lure you in with her creative use of live harp and vocal looping, entwined within her playful brand of pop which redefines the boundaries of her once-classical instrument.
