Getting around the Gold Coast

From the minute you arrive here on the Gold Coast, you’ll notice that our city is just as diverse as the people who inhabit it, with hinterland, beaches, and bustling metropolitan areas all within mere kilometres of one other. There’s lots to explore, so thankfully, there are also lots of ways to get around.

How to get here

Depending on where you are coming from, it’s likely that you will fly into one of two airports – our international airport here on the Gold Coast, or Brisbane Airport, approximately an hour away in Queensland’s capital city.

If you are coming from the Gold Coast Airport, it will take approximately 20 minutes to arrive here at Bond. You can take a shuttle, jump in a taxi or use a rideshare app. Buses are also available at the airport, however, because there is not a direct route to the University it will require you to change buses.

From Brisbane Airport, you can take the Gold Coast train line until you reach Varsity Lakes or Robina stations, and then catch a bus to Bond University from there. Shuttles and private car services are also available.

Getting around

Once you’ve arrived on the Gold Coast, you have your pick of public transport options, with robust light rail, train and bus services, as well as local and international airports nearby.

Trains

Within 10 minutes’ driving distance of Bond, you will find two train stations at Varsity Lakes and Robina. These service many parts of the Gold Coast and Brisbane, and reach as far as the Brisbane Airport. Perfect for taking a day trip to the city, trains leave at regular intervals throughout the day, with additional services during peak hour, and can be accessed by using prepaid tickets or a tap-on-tap-off card system (Go Card) that is easy to top up.

Buses

Our city is well-serviced with an extensive bus network and an ever-growing list of routes that span the entire region. We have our own bus stop right out the front of Bond University, and buses regularly deliver students and locals to the beach, shopping centres, theme parks, train stations and more. The go card system is also used on buses, making it easy to pay for your trip and seamlessly plan your journey.

Light Rail

Since opening in 2014, the Gold Coast Light Rail tram system (G:link) has grown to encapsulate many parts of the Gold Coast, and is an easy and convenient form of public transport in metro areas. With stations spanning from Helensvale in the north to Broadbeach South, the light rail system is set to expand even further in the next decade to accommodate the Gold Coast’s rapid growth. To get to Bond from a light rail stop, you will have to catch a connecting bus or drive.

Driving

Although our public transport system is fantastic, and growing rapidly, many Gold Coasters prefer to drive themselves around. All students at Bond have access to free parking on campus, so if you would also prefer to get behind the wheel, doing so is easy and convenient.

Rideshare

If you don’t drive yourself, but enjoy the convenience of travelling by car, rideshare is a popular form of transport on the Gold Coast. With multiple providers to choose from, prices are competitive, positioning rideshare as a great option for travelling on occasion.

Getting to Brisbane

Just a short drive or train ride away from the Gold Coast is Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland and a major hub for business and cultural pursuits.

Driving to Brisbane takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours from Bond depending on traffic. If you choose to travel via train, you will depart from either Varsity Lakes or Robina station, and the trip to Brisbane's Central Station takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes. Visit the Translink website for more information on taking the train and to plan your journey.
